Should I apply to more prestigious northern schools or stay in state (Florida)?
I am a senior in high school wanting to break into IB. I have a decent sat (1400) and 4.0 unweighted gpa and could possibly get into target schools if I apply test optional. I have no desire to move out of my state for college, and definitely don't want to leave the south. On top of this, I have college paid for in Florida. Is going to a non target going to screw me for New York jobs?
Based on the most helpful WSO content, it's not necessarily a disadvantage to attend a non-target school. In fact, there are several advantages to consider:
Motivated Alumni: Many state schools have selective investment banking clubs or programs. These programs and their alumni bases are often smaller, which can work to your advantage. Alumni often feel a strong sense of responsibility to help grow the presence of their school in the industry. They may go out of their way to help you secure interviews and provide support.
Big Fish, Small Pond: At a non-target school, you may find more opportunities to grow your technical knowledge and take on leadership roles. With fewer students aiming for the industry, positions in finance clubs can be more accessible.
Performance Matters: Once you land a job in banking, your school doesn't matter as much. You'll be judged based on your performance, attitude, and personality.
However, it's important to note that breaking into investment banking from a non-target school may require extra effort. You might need to answer very technical interview questions and further prove yourself.
In the end, the decision should be based on what feels right for you. If you have no desire to leave your state and have your college paid for in Florida, these are significant factors to consider. Remember, it's not just about getting into investment banking, but also about enjoying your college experience and making the most of the opportunities available to you.
