Energy Trading Career Path
Hi, so I graduated in 2018 and have been working S&T since. I joined a startup that hedged on behalf of different companies (producers, small refiners, PE) and managed everything for the trade, except for wiring the payments and traded with all of the IB/BB/MM companies. I started in back office, moved to fundamentals/analytics for 3 years and then spent my last year trading there. However, I wanted to make a jump to the spec side and joined a supermajor covering their WTI desk (only financial desk they had) after about 4.5 years at the startup I joined out of college. I found the bureaucracy/politics of the supermajor frustrating and accepted an offer to join a growing HF (junior PM). In short, I'm wondering if I shot myself in the foot by not staying at the supermajor longer where I could get more physical experience. So far, the majority of my experience is financial and I think I would like to only trade financial, but realize shops still value physical experience even if you are doing financial. I would like to stay on the financial side, preferably HF unless I start my own thing. How important is having years of physical trading experience?
