Feeder schools for Sales & Trading (non-US)
Hey all,
I’m going to be doing my Masters in 2022, I was wondering what were the top feeder Schools for S&T that are outside the US, (Europe, Asia). More specifically targeting a sell-side Trading desk over Sales, so I’ll be doing a quantitive degree.
INSEAD
LBS
Bocconi
any others?
I was preliminary thinking about the Quantitative Finance and Risk Management masters at Bocconi, any thoughts?
appreciate any color.
You should look ESCP Europe which is a target school for S&T in France and with different campus across Europe
Thanks ! I work at a French Bank on the Sales desk already, I want to go on the Trading side, so wanted to take a step back get the skills I'm missing and try for trading not sales. I see this school has a financial market specialization, which is good. Is this school known for other banks non-french?
Since ESCP is #3 school in France and top 5 in Europe, you will not have too much problem with non-French bank !
UK usual targets (LSE, LBS, Oxbridge, Imperial, etc...)
Continental Europe ones: HEC, Bocconi, French engineering schools for quants/quant traders, ...
Check the most frequently asked questions London edition, which listed the target schools in the IB forum. It's pretty much the same on the S&T side.
Thanks this is helpful, I find the school is important, but equally the program, I see certain schools have only a Master of Finance, something that doesn't really go into the weeds and teach you the quantitative skills you need on a trading desk. I come from a finance background and have my CFA Level II, trying to acquire the skills I'm missing which is more on the quantitative finance side perhaps learning some coding skills too, which I can use on a derivatives trading desk.
Doing a financial engineering or math masters would be helpful but I probably don't have the prerequisites (math/coding) coming from finance only. Have you heard of the Quantitative Finance and Risk Management Course at Bocconi, you think this is worth while ranks highly for S&T ? or perhaps I would be better in another program, any thoughts?
I think I've seen a few people from this exact programme. Generally Bocconi places well, you should be fine. While applying also keep trying to move into a trading seat directly. If you're lacking coding skills, do some Coursera courses and maybe write some pricing models up in Python so you'll have something to talk about in interviews. It doesn't take long. If you blast a few companies with CVs maybe something will come out of it and you won't need to spend time and money doing another degree. If not, at least you'll hit the ground running in the master's. Just don't randomly blast CVs to quant trading firms, a lot of them seem to interview each person only once.
It's a well known course, pretty much similar to the standard 2-year MSc in Finance as far as I understand. So definitely a good choice for London opportunities.
Note that from my limited experience the school matters more than what you study. Having a technical background helps, but it is by no mean a prerequisite for a trading position! I suggest doing some coding on the side. Also, coding is not a prerequisite either - but it's very helpful to know something.
