Getting into sales + trading from Asset management
Hi all, i've been front office for a couple years on a rates desk then an equity derivs desk at a big asset manager, been wanting to move into a trading role at a bank for some time (started off in a tech grad scheme at a bb bank but saw no option for movement internally). Had 0 traction applying to roles, done some networking but it never really leads anywhere, I'm 24 now with a maths background, do i go for a masters (would have to be semi target as targets too expensive) to give me the opportunity to go for internships again? or do I just keep going with the networking?
Based on the most helpful WSO content regarding transitions within the finance industry, here are some actionable steps and considerations for moving from asset management to a sales and trading role at a bank:
Leverage Your Current Experience: Highlight your front office experience on rates and equity derivatives desks in your resume and during networking conversations. This experience is valuable and directly relevant to sales and trading roles.
Intensify Networking Efforts: While you've started networking, consider taking a more strategic approach. Seek out alumni from your university who are currently in sales and trading roles, attend industry events, and consider informational interviews. Be specific about your interest in transitioning to sales and trading when reaching out.
Consider a Master's Program: A master's degree, especially in a quantitative field like mathematics, can enhance your profile. While target schools may be expensive, semi-target schools can still provide excellent opportunities for networking and internships. Ensure the program has a strong placement record in sales and trading roles.
Pursue Relevant Certifications: Certifications such as the CFA or FRM can demonstrate your commitment to finance and enhance your knowledge base, making you a more attractive candidate for sales and trading roles.
Utilize Job Platforms and Recruiters: In addition to networking, make sure your profile is up-to-date on professional job platforms and consider reaching out to recruiters who specialize in finance roles. They can provide insights into the market and potentially open doors to opportunities.
Prepare for Interviews: Brush up on technical skills and market knowledge relevant to sales and trading. Be ready to discuss market trends, trading strategies, and how your background in asset management and technology can add value to a trading desk.
Showcase Your Technical Skills: Given your background in mathematics and technology, highlight your quantitative analysis skills, familiarity with trading platforms, and any programming knowledge, as these are highly valued in sales and trading roles.
Remember, persistence and a strategic approach are key. Keep refining your approach based on the feedback and insights you gain through your efforts. Best of luck in your transition to sales and trading!
