Salesy Jobs without much Excel/PowerPoint/PC time
Hi All!
I'm currently ~30 years old and in a management reporting/strategy role at a top IB after transferring internally from a middle office role on the S&T side. I have ADHD, so despite being smart, I've really had enough of working in Excel/PowerPoint/(being locked in front of a computer altogether, for the most part), and my forte is my interpersonal skills. I'm thinking I will most likely move out of the I-Banking industry into financial planning, pharma sales, real estate, or recruiting, but want to hear suggestions/advice for where I may still have a fit within banking while I'm still in the industry. All the Banking sales/fundraising/cap intro roles that I know of still involve creating lots of marketing materials (unless if one is a MD), but I'd like to be mostly out and about and have some graphic design team worry about that stuff if need be. Thanks a bunch in advance, I appreciate any advice on my thought process!
Hey there! Swinging from the branches of the WSO jungle, I've seen a few folks like you looking to leverage their interpersonal skills while minimizing the time spent on Excel and PowerPoint. Here's a bunch of bananas... I mean, advice, based on the WSO content:
Relationship Management: This is more about nurturing existing client relationships and less about creating pitch books. You might still need to understand the materials, but you're not the one creating them.
Sales Roles in S&T: While these roles do involve some computer time, they're heavily focused on client interaction and relationship building. The catch is, as you've noted, you might still need to deal with some marketing materials, but the focus is on the sale, not the spreadsheet.
Private Banking/Wealth Management: These roles are all about managing client relationships and providing personalized financial advice. You'll be out meeting clients more often than you'll be punching numbers into a computer.
Investor Relations: This role involves communicating with shareholders and potential investors, which means lots of talking and presenting, and less time on detailed financial modeling.
Business Development: This role is about identifying and developing new business opportunities. It's a role that requires a lot of meetings, networking, and relationship-building.
Remember, even in roles that are less "desk-heavy," you'll still need to have a solid understanding of the materials and data that the graphic design team or others are putting together. It's all about finding that sweet spot where your skills shine the brightest. Keep swinging, and you'll find the right vine!
