Trader advice

I just started out as a trader for a small advisor (family)shop. We manage about 500m. For all the traders in here. How did you find what you desk fitted you best? I want to maybe get into traded at IB shop. What would the best way to get there. Any advice would be appreciated.

I'd suggest getting an internship at firms like JS, Citadel or Five Rings. During the internship they will let you rotate between different desks. That's how I figured out what I wanted to do

No offense but the advice you gave was to get an internship at some of the most competitive opportunities in the world. Sounds like you just wanted to brag about going to one of those 3 shops lol.

The way I found the desk that fit me the best was by figuring out what product interested me the most and what I wanted to learn more/research more about regarding microstructure. Do you enjoy the bond market and rates? Does the FOMC excite you? Do you like currencies and different central bank policies' impact on currencies? Do you enjoy following individual stocks? Do you enjoy trading more of the volatility of something than hoping it goes up or down? All questions to ask yourself. I settled on crypto as it's the newest asset class with tons of institutional interest and probably going to give me the best opportunities in the future if institutional interest continues to grow.
