Valuation control groups
The valuation control groups within investment banks that review the valuation on trades ie. structured products, derivatives or illiquid investments - where does that usually lead you in terms of career path? Many seem to co-mingle with product control with one price testing but I'm trying to get out of back office controllers group and this actually sounds interesting~~
What types of positions do people usually end up in?
Please help! thanks =)

You'll be doing mark review (getting consensus on trader's position marks through Bloomberg, outside brokers, etc.) or model review/governance (testing and approving the new models created by the strategists). You'll need programming (MATLAB, R, etc.) and advanced math (Stochastic Calculus) knowledge for the latter. Not sure what your background is in either of those fields.
Regardless of the label you put on the position, it's not a terrible place to start, especially if you can't get a trading position. I've seen people from there move on to a BU risk teams and even to strat/quant roles.
*bump...NYCwall, did you end up taking that role? can you shed some light on it from your experience? I am considering a similar move atm...
Prospects of analyst role in independent valuation control? (Originally Posted: 04/15/2010)
Hi,
Need some advice on the following:
I come across this analyst role in independent valuation control team that sits in the structured product control group of Barclays Capital. Is this a middle office role? If so, how likely is a move from there to becoming a trader?
Thanks in advance!
Anyone pls?
Barclays role in valuation control (Originally Posted: 04/29/2010)

Can anyone comment on the career prospects of this control valuation role? Which area can one advance to from here? To being a quant trader or more into a risk manager?
To add on, I am a recent master graduate in financial engineering who aims to end up as a trader, quant or fund manager at the end of the day. So just want to make sure that I start out the correct way.
Thanks.
ill pm you
liltroy, could you PM me too?
OP, did you end up taking the offer? Can you update us on where you are now?

Hello WSO,
Could you please tell me about exit opportunities from Valuation Control Group. I am frustrated due to it's position in corporate branch, it is independent entity in Product Control Department.
Thanks and best regards

Other threads are dead, so bump one more time.
Also, there is an opportunity to move for ICG Operations Analyst. Propose to create an accountant battle

Hello,
So, in a month time I am starting my Internship in Valuation Control Center. Could you please explain me what I am going to do as Intern(paperwork?) and what should I learn before my Internship will start. I am already trying VBA, but this is absolutely basic stuff.
