Advice Pls! Tech IB to Growth Equity
Hi all,
-
fresh grad (finished a semester early, Dec 2021) from a non-target (only half a dozen people from my school went into IB)
-
joining TMT team full-time @BB in June 2021
REALLY interested in Growth Equity/ late-stage Venture as an Exit. Unlike PE, have heard that Growth recruiting is a lot more unstructured (some on-cycle 2yrs out but some MFs recruit 6m out). Don't have that many banking friends/ alum/ mentors to ask candid advice to.
If someone who has a similar trajectory to growth/ in growth now (Insight, TA, Summit, BXG, Permira, Iconiq, TPG, etc) could please DUMB DOWN the Growth Equity interview preparation process? (eg. for IB we had a narrative, memorized the 400Qs, good understanding of firm's recent deals, can hold convos about vertical/ industry of interest).
My questions:
-
Where do I start? Any certain set of steps you would advise following? Any resources I should follow religiously (newsletters, blogs, etc)?
-
For X firm I get a chance to interview with, I should know: why their firm, their avg inv size, funding rounds/ fund history, sectors/ verticals, sourcing model -- anything else?
-
Have had some intro convos with GE Associates, and they mentioned gaining proficiency in:
3A. Business Models and Software Metrics
3B. Verticals within Tech of interest (eg. be able to speak about 2-3 sexy fintech companies/ trends) -- but what should I know exactly?
3C. 3 Statement Model / Valuation / Accounting -- but that is kinda vague, any narrower advice?
3D. Case Studies -- have never attempted Consulting recruiting, so have no clue if this has any similarities, but where do I start/ what should I be confident in/ any sample outputs?
3E. Anything else bigger picture I am missing?
THANK YOU - sincerely would appreciate as honest advice as possible.
This interview guide / practice case study from vFinal is good for growth equity roles.
Heading to a growth firm (not one mentioned) out of college and think I can shed some light, feel free to pm me
