I am 24, Engineer, Value of CFA and then MBA from a top bschool for career in VC firm
Hi,
i am an Engineer with Bachelor of Engineering in C.Sc from a mediocre college from India. I am looking for a career in VC firm in India or abroad. I thought of doing MBA, but what i came to know is even if i do MBA from a top b-school like IIM's (quite a few VC firms hire from IIM every year), Finance firms usually dont hire those who have IT experience say 1 or 2 years. So what i am thinking is to clear CFA and then switch to Financial career work for say 2 years and then do MBA from top b-school.... then will i stand a chance to get into PE firm. If i still cant get into, then i can get into investment banking work for 2 or 3 years and then jump to PE firm.
I am specifically interested in VC firm.
In general will CFA help for a career in PE/VC firms.... ??
I thinks this is the best way.
CFA is more for investment management or high net worth PWM. It's typically not that respected in PE/VC in the US.
Unless you are planning to work in China, over there they respect the CFA for everything finance

Tech experience + top MBA = way to break into VC.
CFA has no fucking tie to VC, you will be laughed at if you attempt to say this will help
IIM for abroad is not so easy. I know someone who had to get another degree after IIM to get out of India.

CFA is primarily useful for asset management and research. It does cover VC as a topic... but it's only got 1 chapter devoted to it and in only one of the levels. It won't be useful for VC.
In India, the CFA is quite respected in many facets of finance. The only place where the CFA gets a bad rap is in the states in investment banking, from my experience most other financial jobs within the US respect the CFA. The CFA is useful to show that you are interested in finance, but it is not the only way to do that. The CFA also will teach you many useful things. As an educational experience it is worth it.
Disclosure: I am taking my CFA Level 3 this summer.
