Path to GE
Looking mainly at London.
Have seen some people getting into megafunds with experience only in T2 consulting.
Let’s keep it mainly to tier 1/2 funds (as I’m assuming if it satisfies those it will satisfy the rest).
I’m guessing:
-
IBD (any BB+, ideally TMT?)
-
Consulting (MBB/T2)
-
Sector-related startup (i.e Saas startup) (what role?)
-
Other VC/GE (what standard needed?)
Thanks!
Navigating the path to securing a position at a Global Equity (GE) or Venture Capital (VC) firm, especially in a competitive market like London, requires strategic career moves and a keen understanding of what these top-tier funds are looking for. Based on insights from Wall Street Oasis, here's a breakdown of potential pathways and considerations for each:
Investment Banking Division (IBD) Experience:
Consulting Background:
Sector-Related Startup Experience:
Other VC/GE Experience:
Additional Considerations: - Networking: Building a strong professional network within the finance and startup communities can open doors and provide insights into opportunities that may not be publicly advertised. - Educational Background: While not always a deal-breaker, a strong academic record from a reputable institution can enhance your profile. - Personal Projects/Investments: Demonstrating a keen interest in investing, through personal projects or a track record of successful investments, can also bolster your application.
In summary, while there's no one-size-fits-all path to GE or VC in London, focusing on roles that build relevant skills and demonstrate your ability to add value to an investment team is key. Whether through banking, consulting, startup experience, or direct VC/GE roles, what matters most is the impact you've made and the skills you've developed along the way.

Yes see that a lot. My perception is, and having done a lot of hiring for tier2 GE, that even large funds look for tech experience and love for tech over anything else. Prestige helps, but moving to GE is uphill if you come from say MS Telco or BX PE etc. non-tech background. Plus it's just generally less modeling intensive so CDD experience actually helps a lot.
