Networking - PWM

So I am working on getting some kind of internship, shadowing experience for the summer. Have been contacting local pwms to arrange short talks about what they do, etc. (going into my sophomore year) in hopes of then being able to shadow them for a few days, etc. I have been pretty successor so far, but one guy I emailed just responded with "How did you get my email? Thanks." I knew it would come eventually, since I haven't met any of these guys before, but I was wondering what the best way to handle this would be. Should I apologize and tell him I just deduced it from the info on his webpage? I just guessed his email, since the ones for his company are all formatted the same, but I don't want to tell him that. The one actually given on his site would have been through client services (ew).

That's what I ended up doing - just telling him I guessed. Guess I was just afraid to piss him off. Suppose its all part of the process though.

 

Thanks and PA/NJ Area. What you said is true, the few people I have talked to are very willing to lend advice and be helpful. The only issue at this point is that due to privacy issues they don't seem "able" to allow me to even shadow them. Any thoughts on how I could get around this? Since none of this would be a formal internship I keep asking myself how they could at all benefit from any shadowing or internship I do. I have a back up at an unknown pwm place, but I'm trying to get something at a big name first; I figure it will stand out more on the resume. Thanks for the help everyone.

Where in the PA/NJ area? Although I am in investment banking now, I have a lot of contacts in the PWM space. I might be able to help you out.

When you network with people in PWM: 1.) Be very direct and tell them you are looking for an internship. Your strategy works for banking recruiting but there is no need to "arrange short talks to find out what they do" in PWM. Upfront openness and transparency is mutually-beneficial and saves everyone time and energy.

2.) Don't mention "shadow" as people won't know what that means. Just say internship and offer to work four hours a day for a few weeks (as that will not impose too much on the firm and prevent either party from making that big of a commitment). It will all be unpaid, btw (though you will get nice perks, depending on your situation).

3.) Lose your ego at the door. Just tell them you are willing to work hard and come in with an open mind. Instead of trying to be the smartest or smoothest individual, try to position yourself as the hardest-working and a team player. Whether it is grunt work or digging in the trenches, you will still give you 110% and be positive.
