Following up after sending my resume/how to go about getting an internship.
Hey WSO! Recently, I've been contacting private-wealth-management firms near me for a Summer internship. I'm a Freshmen at a non-target so it's been tough but I emailed one of the branch managers regarding my interests, and asked for my resume. It's been around 2 weeks now, and no response.
I feel like I'm approaching this incorrectly though. I read some older posts about getting an internship into a PWM firm, and it's not as of a clean-cut process especially in my position. So I have to go the extra mile (as I should) and reach out to HR, or someone high up in there. I found that most of the time when I ask to have a phone call regarding my interest in the industry and wanting to learn more, it's just ignored (they have better things to do). But I've gotten responses to drop my resume when I just get to the point when I just introduce my self in the email, my goals, and inquiring about Summer internships.
I had another instance lately as well -- got on the phone with a VP, went great. I learned a lot. I asked how I could get ahead early on and he said internships -- from there he basically told me to email the branch manager. Did so yesterday and no response.
Sorry if this post seems scattered. I'm new to this entire thing, and don't want to mess it up.

Generally, how long are your emails? If you're sending out cold emails, they should be particularly short and succinct.
One week from your point of initial contact is an acceptable time-frame for a follow-up email imo.

I'm in a similar boat, Sophomore, non-target, trying to get some PWM experience on my resume before junior summer. I recently got called in for an interview, after two years of sending resumes, emails etc to all types of companies without a single response. I think what made the difference in my case was establishing an in-person relationship with someone someone currently works there. Emails can make miracles happen but I think having the opportunity to talk face to face with the right person can be a really good opportunity to show that you're a good candidate, even before an interview. It also cant hurt to give them a face and a personality to associate with your name, which is just one out of many others on a list a lot of the time.

Awesome. I just always feel like if I ask for time on the phone or a talk over coffee is just a burden on their day so I'm generally afraid to go that route.
If you don't mind me asking, were you interviewed at an office or branch? I'm currently reaching out to branches so the "recruiting" (there really isn't any) is very non-traditional.

Thats understandable, its really hard to hit a the ideal spot between doing too much and not doing enough. It helps to have a mutual contact introduce you to whomever you're trying to talk with, so you're not seen as "just another kid".
They had me come to their headquarters for the interview. In the past when I've reached out to branches, they've always had me send everything to their main office, or in the cases of larger places, they just direct me to whatever website they use for recruiting. I could be wrong, but it's my impression that most branches don't do the hiring, and instead thats left to HR at some higher up place.
The interview actually went really well. Very laid back, it was less like an interview and more like a friendly conversation. A far cry from some of the horror stories I've read on here.
following up or sending cold emails is for losers.
If you're hireable, all you have to do is send out the resume and it'll do the talking.
If you're GPA is under 3.9, you don't have A+ in corporate finance and valuation, and you're not a master in VBA and R and/or Python, then remember I don't like lettuce on cheese burgers.
